Chocolate Berry Protein Smoothie Recipe + Tracking Your Macronutrients (aka macros)

Hi friends!

After a week off due to a crazy, busy schedule, I’m back. If you’re a regular at Mallard and Magnolia, you know I really enjoy healthy, clean eating (and baked goods – it’s called balance). I’m a big advocate for Whole30 and recently completed the program for the second time. I love Whole30 and appreciate the fact that you do it as a “system reset” and not a weight loss program.

However, I’ve had a few lingering pounds from the holidays that I can’t seem to get rid of. This was especially frustrating because I eat pretty clean but realized that I had probably plateaued and my portions may be off. I’ve heard a lot about tracking your macro intake and decided to give it a try. For the past three weeks, I’ve been tracking my macronutrients – carbohydrates, protein and fat and am down four pounds. I definitely feel leaner and plan to calculate my current body fat percentage in the next week or two because the goal is to lose fat and not muscle mass.

I calculated my recommended macro goal using If It Fits Your Macros at iifym.com and use My Fitness Pal – app and website for tracking. I adjusted my macro ratio in the app according to the numbers I was given by IIFYM. The only downfall to the free app is that it won’t let you input your macros based on grams. You have to adjust the percentages which means that your macros may not be exact but you can get them pretty close. I was okay with this so I stuck with the free version. I’ve also found it’s a lot easier to view your nutritional intake for the day, create meals and meal plan on the website. The app is a great tool to use on the go though!

Here’s my log from yesterday. You can easily view your intake by clicking Nutrition which shows percentages under the macro tab and grams under the nutrients tab. I didn’t hit my goal dead on but was pretty close. You can see my goal and see what I actually consumed for the day.

I’ve been making protein smoothies for breakfast lately since they are an easy and quick way to enjoy a balanced meal. The key to making a smoothie that keeps you full until lunch is making sure it includes plenty of protein, carbs and healthy fat. Today, I’m sharing one of my go-to smoothie recipes with you. I try to avoid dairy on a daily basis (but do love it) so my liquid preference is either an unsweetened almond milk or coconut almond blend.

Chocolate Berry Protein Smoothie

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup strawberries, frozen
  • 1/4 cup blackberries, frozen
  • 2 TBSP unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 2 cups organic baby spinach
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup ice

Directions

Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend on crush ice mode to break up your frozen ingredients and ice for about 30 seconds. After frozen ingredients are broken up blend on the liquify setting until smooth.

Notes: I use Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk and Body Fortress Whey Protein Isolate. I prefer to use a whey isolate protein since it has less calories than a plain whey protein.

I hope you enjoy this quick and easy breakfast. I plan to share some other recipes soon so stayed tuned! Do you have any favorite smoothie ingredients? I’d love to try them.

Tips to make company feel welcome

Hi friends!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! Did you have any big plans? On Friday, my parents came to town to stay the weekend and celebrate my daughter’s ninth birthday. The weekend was pretty low key, but we had such a great time enjoying the local shopping, cooking together and catching up. As I’ve mentioned before, my parents live about five hours north of me so I don’t get to spend as much time with them as I would like. It’s normally easier for us to go up to visit them for a week or so over school breaks and holidays. Since they were making the trip down this time, I wanted to put together a few special touches to make them feel welcome and show how excited we were to have them!

We do not have a guest room so when company comes, we use my daughter’s room and she bunks up with her brother since he has a set of twin beds. I love how light and airy her room is. The afternoon sun pours in and makes it bright and cheery. Since we moved, I’ve been so focused on the public spaces and have been putting off the bedrooms. I’ve got big plans for her bedroom which I plan to share with you down the road, but I digress.

Today, I’m highlighting ways to make your guests feel welcome with my company checklist!

img_6661img_6657img_6670img_6671img_6775

Make guests feel welcome with this company checklist:

  • Fresh sheets
  • Extra pillows
  • Plush throw blanket regardless of season
  • Magazines or books by the bed
  • Fresh flowers in the guest room and bathroom
  • Welcome guests with bottled water and a small snack tray in their room including locally made food products.
  • Luggage rack and space in closet for hanging clothes
  • Stock the bathroom with extra toiletries, towels, hand towels, soap, toilet paper and a hairdryer. I save the pretty mini toiletries from hotel rooms to leave in a decanter for my guest bathroom.
  • Have snacks, coffee and drinks at the ready. Items guests can grab on their own are always appreciated. A batch of muffins on the counter, a bottle of their favorite wine or snacks in the pantry go a long way in making company feel welcome.
  • Consider allergies or dietary needs, especially if you plan to cook at home for your guests.
  • Provide a spare key and list of passwords or important instructions, e.g.; how to use the security alarm, wi-fi password, etc.
  • For first time visitors, put together a small welcome pack of maps, local attractions and points of interest. This information can easily be picked up at your local visitor’s bureau.
  • Plan activities but leave room in the schedule for flexibility. I like to have a running list of things to do with guests but be sure not to over plan and leave room for down time.

So there you have it! With a few personal touches and a little effort, they’ll feel like their staying at a small town bed and breakfast. What are your tips for entertaining overnight guests?

Cheers,

Christa

Valentine’s Recap & Easy Floral Arrangements

Happy Wednesday!

How was your Valentine’s Day?! Did you do anything special? Since Valentine’s Day fell on Ash Wednesday, I decided to celebrate the occasion with a festive breakfast since we had plans to attend the Ash Wednesday service at church that evening.

In my 18 in 18 post, I resolved to celebrate the small holidays this year – even if it’s in a small way. I decided to set a fun table and serve an easy breakfast. I put together my tablescape with some new red buffalo check placemats I picked up in Athens two weekends ago. I shopped my house for the table decor, using old books to add height to my flowers and vintage Valentine postcards that I found at a local antique shop. I have postcards for different holidays and think they are a cute and whimsical way to add a festive touch to a holiday vignette. When setting a table, don’t be afraid to think outside of the box – my red monogrammed “napkins” under the plates are actually hand towels. We weren’t using them as napkins so it’s didn’t matter – I just wanted to add some personality.

img_6484img_6479img_6483img_6482img_6494

Setting a nice table elevates even the most simple meals. Since we had to hurry to school and work, I made heart-shaped toast, eggs, fruit and set out sparkling pink lemonade – much to my daughter’s delight. I think I could have served cereal and my kids still would have loved it.

Now onward to the post itself – tips for easy floral arranging! This weekend, I was asked to put together a few flower arrangments for an open-house event. The home is transitional in style with traditional bones, contemporary touches and tons of personality. I decided to put together simple arrangments that would complement the decor without competing for attention.

Easy Floral Arrangements

Take inventory

I started with a walkthrough of the home. I jotted down a list of spots that needed flowers and gathered containers they had on hand. My list consisted of the foyer, living room side table, kitchen counter, breakfast table and a few small arrangements I could tuck places like a bathroom or accent table. They had two beautiful silver vases for the foyer, a mirrored container for the accent table and three small glass vases – the rest was up to me to purchase.

Shop

I decided on my color scheme – pink and white, which would pop off the neutral walls and feel like spring which is right around the corner. I also decided to do a mix of fresh and potted flowers. I think the potted flowers give a more casual feel plus they can be enjoyed for a long time! I headed to my local nursery which specializes in potted plants but they also carry fresh. Since I was shopping post-Valentine’s Day, I scored some deals on the fresh flowers. I recommend bringing your containers with you while shopping so you can judge the quantity and scale properly. I like to arrange in odd numbers and fill my containers with a thriller, a filler and a spiller. The thriller usually makes a statement and adds height, the filler is just that – smaller flowers and/or greener to fill in the gaps and something to spill over the sides and keeps your eye moving around the arrangement.

I picked up a potted plant in a simple woven basket for the breakfast table. For the living room side table, I decided on elegant orchids with a mix of greenery. The kitchen counter needed something big and tall, so I decided on daffodils and hyacinth for height and ferns for filler. The foyer containers were extremely narrow and need a statement arrangement. I decided to do something a bit more structural and picked pink roses to line up in the vase and grabbed a tall grass to add height and my spiller. For the small accent arrangments, I stuck with white roses and snapdragons.

img_6547img_6576img_6555

The only container I needed to shop for was the kitchen counter arrangement. I wanted a large, shallow white bowl and easily found a variety of white serving bowls at TJ Maxx. For other great places to find containers try thrift shops and Goodwill. I’ve scored some seriously beautiful brass planters and blue and white flower vases and planters at these places for pennies. I also like to repurpose items by thinking outside of the box. Teacups, serving ware and baskets all make great containers for indoor arrangements. Also, even if you are purchasing an arrangement from a professional florist, you can save some serious money by providing your own container.

Prep

Once you get your fresh flowers home, trim the ends of each stem by about an inch, stick them in a bucket of fresh, cold water and let them sit for about 30 minutes to an hour. This refreshes, hydrates and opens your blooms.

img_6548-1

Arrange

Once you are ready to arrange your fresh flowers, trim your ends again and remove leaves that would be submerged in the water. I hold my flowers up to my container to judge the height and trim and de-leaf accordingly. For my smaller arrangments, I started with my tallest flowers (my thrillers) and cut about 2-3 per arrangement. From there, I stuck in white roses to fill in the gaps. Again, I like to work in odd numbers but this is not the be all and end all. Last, I finished it off with some greenery to spill over the sides of the arrangements. This type of arrangement takes no time at all and are easy to keep around the house and change out on a weekly basis.

img_6559img_6557

My pink rose arrangement required a bit more structure. To be honest, I would reserve an arrangement of this nature for an event. I filled the silver vases with water and an acrylic vase filler which keeps the stems in place. Another method to give your arrangement structure is to create a grid with floral tape across the top of the vase but my container was too narrow for this. I started by trimming my pink roses and lining them up in a row across the container. After this, I added some tall green grass in the back of the arrangement to give it height. In the front, I stuck in my greenery to spill over the front and side of the vase. Once my spiller was in place, I realized there was a weird gap in the arrangement and I decided to fill it in with the second row of roses. I trimmed these slightly shorter than the top row and stuck in 3-4 to fill in space. Once the flowers were in place, I readjusted all the other elements as needed.

img_6562img_6564img_6563img_6566

The last set of arrangements were my potted flowers. Start with the container of your choice and take flowers out of pots one at a time. I started with my statement “thriller” which was the daffodils. I broke up the root system at the bottom (I broke and reduced mine up by about half) and placed the flowers in the center of my container. From there, I filled in with my other flowers, packing them in tightly next to each other. Last, I added the small white blooms to spill over the sides of the bowl. Once your flowers are all in place, fill in gaps with extra potting soil and wipe the side of the container clean. I finish off all my indoor arrangements with dried Spanish moss which can easily be found at any craft store.

img_6568img_6569img_6571img_6570img_6572img_6573img_6574

Note: If choosing a container with a drainage hole, be sure to place a saucer or plate underneath to keep water from leaking out the bottom.

So there you have it – three easy arrangements just in time for spring! Do you arrange your own flowers? What are your favorite spring blooms to use?

Cheers,

Christa

Friday Favorites: The Little Black Dress

Hi there!

Today, we’re highlighting the piece that should be in every woman’s wardrobe – the LBD. As I mentioned in my 18 in 18 post, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect little black dress and have included some of my favorite styles priced at around $200 and below.

When shopping, keep the following in mind:

Classic shape

A great dress will last for years. Invest in a LBD with a classic silhouette that will outlast trends.

Seasonless

Steer clear of materials you can only wear during the summer or winter months. Instead, opt for versatile fabrics you can wear year round.

Alterations

Find a good tailor by asking a trusted boutique or department store for recommendations and get a perfect fit by having your dress tailored specifically for you.

Take a photo

I find it helpful to take a photo in the mirror of the dressing room when trying on clothes. For me, it gives a more objective idea of what looks most flattering on my body – especially when trying on multiple items that are similar, like a black dress.

Day to night

Make sure you select a dress that will take you from day to night. I specifically think about the places I’ll need to wear the dress. For me, this means picking a dress conservative enough that I can wear to work with a blazer or dress up for a cocktail party or wedding or as much as I hate to say it, a funeral.

Have a point of view

Pick a dress that showcases your personality. I lean towards classic, tailored silhouettes but like pieces that have some kind of twist to them, like a cut-out, fun sleeve or leather accents.

Love yourself with self-care tips

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today I’m taking an unconventional approach to the day of love. In lieu of romance, I’m focusing on loving yourself by sharing my favorite ways to boost happiness and relax with self-care tips!

I wear a lot of hats. I’m a single mom of two, precious children with a full-time career and two side hustles. In my *cough cough* spare time, I enjoy volunteering and giving back to my community through various organizations that I belong to. Throw in a social life and hobbies and it’s enough to make my head spin sometimes. The truth is, most of us are busy and over-programmed. In our western society, people equate busyness with success and view it as a badge of honor. However, I’m thinking the French have the right idea by taking the whole month of August off.

Through the craziness, I’ve realized I have to take care of myself or no one else will! This means that’s it’s okay to say no and take time for me. I believe in taking care of my body by eating healthy, working out and getting plenty of rest and have learned it’s equally important to take care of my mental and emotional health through self-care.

Below, you will find my top ten ways to relax, recharge and take time outside for myself. I encourage you to incorporate one or more of these self-care tactics into your daily routine and reap the benefits!

coffee-flower-reading-magazine

1. Schedule a date with yourself

In my very first blog post, 18 in 18, I mentioned my goal of setting a few hours aside on a weekly basis for something I want to do. It’s easy to fall victim to a busy schedule, so I’ve found I have to be intentional with this goal. At the beginning of my week, I actually schedule my “me time” and plan what I what to do and when. Mine have been as simple as spending time catching up on my favorite magazines or visiting a new coffee shop and just relaxing. When I travel for work, I try to pair my “me time” with things I like to do in different cities.

2. Listen to a podcast

I love podcasts! I wish I had more time to read so I love that I can listen to a podcast while I’m doing other things. I like to turn mundane tasks into something I like to do by pairing them with my favorite podcasts. I listen while getting ready, cooking, folding laundry or traveling. My favorite podcast to listen to is Happier with Gretchen Rubin which is a fun and lighthearted personal development podcast that focuses on happiness, habits and life hacks.

Running

3. Move

I do a strength training program three times a week and always leave the gym with my endorphins pumping. Not only do I feel great, but I sleep better and am less stressed. Walking or running outside in nature is also a great mood booster. If you are looking to relax or help with anxiety, yoga is a great option. When my kids get upset or throw tantrums, I send them outside to walk a few laps around the house. It’s a great way for them to blow off steam, calm down and release the negative energy. My daughter has a hard time sleeping, so sometimes she likes to unwind at night with a yoga for kids video which seems to help a lot.

4. Meditate

As our society has become more busy and overstimulated, meditation has become mainstream. I try to take 10 minutes out of my day, usually around lunchtime, to refocus and meditate. There are plenty of guided meditation apps out there – I use Headspace which offers 3, 5, and 10-minute meditation sessions for free (with upgrade options available). When I have more time, I love to do a deep muscle relaxation for thirty minutes. This technique requires that you lay down and start by stretching your arms above your head and pointing your toes while stretching and tensing your entire body for 10 breaths. You repeat that a few times, then lay with your hands by your side completely still and focus on your breathing. I like to listen to the Deep Sleep playlist on Spotify while I do this. I become so relaxed, that my body almost feels weightless and it’s hard not to fall asleep. I recommend setting a timer and sitting up slowly when you’re done. It’s important to move slowly and reacclimate yourself when you start to get up so you don’t fall over when you start to walk.

Photographer

5. Channel your creativity

You don’t have to be Picasso to benefit from channeling your inner creative spirit through coloring or drawing, photography, gardening, cooking, etc. I find it freeing to disconnect from technology and use a different side of my brain.

6. Rest

Getting enough sleep and taking time each day to rest is crucial to our mental and physical health. You hear a lot of people say, “I just need 5-6 hours of sleep and I’m good”. Truth is EVERYONE needs a full 7-9 hours. When we don’t sleep enough, our cognitive function and emotional intelligence are impaired – in short, you are irritable and groggy and may just think that’s your norm. Sleep deprivation is also linked to mental health disorders and depression. I am very protective of my eight hours and make a point to turn in early. I even have a bedtime alarm on my phone. In addition to sleep, it’s important to take time out of the day to unwind and simply be still. I’m constantly battling busyness and have to remind myself to take some time to relax and recharge as it actually increases energy and productivity levels. I used to work through lunch and eat at my desk but realized taking an hour to leave the office to eat and unwind actually benefits my performance and mood. I’m on fortunate enough to live a few miles from work so I go home but you can pack a lunch and head outside to eat nice days or go for a walk after you eat. I have a friend that walks around the local mall at lunch which is a great way to relieve stress and change scenery.

Sunny Day

7. Get outside

Turn off your phone and breath the fresh air. There is something so calming about being outside and connecting with nature. Visit a park, go for a walk in your neighboorhood or simply sit on your patio and soak up that vitamin D. Research shows that natural light exposure actually increases your levels of serotonin, which is your body’s happiness chemical.

8. Connect with loved ones

Call a family member or meet a friend for coffee! Nothing boosts your mood like laughing and spending time with those you love.

Bath

9. Relax with a bubble bath

One of my favorite ways to relax when I’ve had a long day or a hard workout is to take a bath or long shower. Throw on some music and light the candles. I’ve been using Epsom salts lately which come infused with essential oils are great for soothing achy muscles. No need to pay a lot. I use Dr. Teal’s which can be found at your local grocery store with the other bath products.

Journal

10. Journal

I’ve journaled through different seasons of my life and find it helpful to relieve stress or promote mindfulness – depending on the goal. When I went through my divorce, I found it helpful to write everything down in a journal, from prayers to feelings, to release and let go of the emotion. However, I rarely keep a detailed, in-depth journal anymore. For my lifestyle, it’s more realistic to keep a one-line, gratitude or daily intentions journal.  Try keeping a daily log of something you are grateful for every day – it will force you to focus on all of the positive blessings in your life. I also like to keep track of my daily intentions which helps me focus on living the life I want to live instead of going through the day in a reactive state. I’ll make one for the week with weekly intentions and create a goal in different areas – spiritual, personal, work, kids/relationships, and tranquility. Then each morning or evening before I go to bed, I’ll set intentions which are small, realistic goals in those areas for the day. It’s helpful to remember this isn’t a to-do list so you don’t beat yourself up if something doesn’t happen! Some examples may be, have a morning quiet time, take time for me by ____ , go on a bike ride with the kids after school, have a certain mindset/attitude in a meeting, etc.

So there you have it, my favorite ways to love and take care of yourself! What are your favorite ways to relax or recharge?

Cheers,

Christa

Heart Linzer Cookies For Valentine’s Day

Hi there!

It’s almost Valentine’s Day so today I’m deviating from the healthier recipes I’ve been making lately to share with you a delicious cookie recipe.

img_6351

Over Christmas break, my daughter and I were watching the Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” Christmas episode and this cookie recipe reeled me in. Linzer cookies, made with toasted almonds and sweet raspberry jam, are a traditional Austrian Christmas cookie. This variation calls for nutmeg and cinnamon which bring flavor to the dough without overtly screaming Fa-la-la-la-la. Since the cookies are cut into heart shapes, I thought, why not make these for Valentine’s Day.

We’ll be sharing our big batch of cookies with my kids’ classmates instead of paper Valentine cards. I bought clear cellophane bags for the cookies which we plan to adorn with lots of festive ribbons. Dusted with powdered sugar, these cookies make a pretty enough presentation of themselves that they can be gifted sans fancy packaging to your galantines, kiddos or sweetheart!

On days that I bake, I usually split the recipe up over two days. A lot of times, I’ll make the dough and pop it in the refrigerator to roll out and bake later. However, for this recipe, I went ahead and baked the cookies on day one and assembled them with the jam and powdered sugar on day two. Doing it this way just seems to make the task less daunting. From there, I lined an airtight container with parchment and stuck the cookies in the freezer until they are ready to bag and give out at school.

img_6335

The key to this recipe is cutting your dough into thirds, rolling it out and refrigerating the sheets. Whatever you do, do not pull all three sheets of dough out of the refrigerator at the same time. Work with one sheet at a time, pulling more dough from the refrigerator as you are ready to cut and bake. This cookie dough is full of butter and becomes a mushy mess at room temperature. If you don’t work fast, it will stick to your cookie cutter and you’ll have to start over with rolling and refrigerating again. When making the cookie tops, I went a step further and cut out a sheet full of hearts and refrigerated them for another couple before I cut out the inside heart of the top cookie. The dough is so delicate and will tear easily when soft. Refrigerating them again allowed the dough to become firm so the middle heart popped out easily without ripping or sticking to the cookie sheet.

img_6234

With that being said, this recipe is straightforward and easy to make. Happy baking!

img_6342

Linzer Heart Sandwich Cookies Courtesy of Alex Guarnaschelli

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 sticks lightly salted butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour, plus additional flour for rolling the cookies
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup seedless raspberry jam
  • Powdered sugar, optional

Directions:

Special equipment: 2 heart-shaped (or round) cookie cutters, one about 1 1/2 inches and one about 3/4 inches

For the cookie batter: In the bowl of an electric mixer, whip the butter until smooth. Add the sugar and continue mixing until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, 5 to 8 minutes.

In another bowl, combine and mix the flour, almonds, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Mix and roll the cookies: Because this dough has a good amount of butter, it needs resting time and needs to be rolled fairly quickly. Lay 3 large pieces of wax paper in a single layer on a flat surface. Sprinkle each one with a light coating of flour. Remove the bowl from the mixer and, using a rubber spatula, blend the flour mixture in with the butter. When the ingredients are fully integrated, place one-third of the batter on each of the pieces of wax paper. Coat with another light layer of flour and top with another piece of wax paper of the same length to make 3 dough “sandwiches.” Press these wax paper and dough sandwiches down with your hands until the dough is fairly thin. This will save a lot of time on rolling later on. Place 2 of them in the refrigerator and work with them one at a time. Roll the first batch into as neat a shape as possible. What matters most is avoiding creases or cracks and getting it to about 1/8 inch in thickness. When the first is rolled, refrigerate it and repeat the same process for the other 2. Let them chill at least 10 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Make the cookie bottoms: Remove the first rolled sheet from the refrigerator and cut as many 1 1/2-inch hearts (or rounds) as you can. Reserve the scraps in the refrigerator. Arrange the hearts neatly in a single layer on a greased baking sheet. Repeat with the other 2 sheets, reserving any scraps.

Make the cookie tops: Cut a heart, with the smaller cutter, out of the center of half of all the cookies. Roll the scraps in between 2 of the pieces of wax paper and cut additional hearts, if desired.

Bake and assemble the cookie sandwiches: Bake the cookies until they are lightly brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Remove the trays from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the tray for a few minutes before gently transferring them to a flat surface.

Place the raspberry jam in a small pot and bring it to a light simmer. Remove from the heat to cool slightly as well. Spoon 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon raspberry jam on each bottom and place a top heart on squarely on each. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Yields 2 1/2 to 3 dozen 1 1/2 inch cookies

Friday Favorites: Fitness Gear

Happy Friyay!

Today we’re talking fitness. I love to workout and train three times a week with a Crossfit style trainer. My strength and weight training program just does it for me in a way that running, yoga and other workouts have not. Not only has it transformed the way I look but it has does wonders for my stress levels, sleep and mental health.

I was in and out of the gym for several years before I finally decided to invest in a trainer. Between work, kids and life in general, I knew I needed accountability to be consistent. At first, it was hard to justify the cost but realized I can pay for my health now or later. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather spend a little on the front end to take care of my overall health to prevent sickness and disease later in life. So, I encourage you to find a form of fitness that works best for you and stick with it!

With that being said, here’s a list of my favorite go-to fitness apparel and gear you can use at home or at the gym. Now, in the words of Olivia Newton-John, let’s get physical…

Atlanta Travel Recap: The Lion King at The Fox Theatre & Georgian Terrace Hotel

Hi friends!

I recently mentioned a little getaway to Atlanta over MLK Day weekend to see the Lion King at the fabulous Fox Theatre. Today, I’ll be sharing a few highlights from the trip!

I grew up in metro-Atlanta where I regularly attended shows at The Fox Theatre (the Nutcracker remains my all-time favorite). Built in the 1920’s as a home for the Atlanta Shriner’s Organization, this exquisite theater was created to mirror the temples of the Far East. Its walls will transport you back in time to an ancient mosque constructed of soaring turrets and domes with ornate gold leaf detail. When the show starts and the lights dim, you can look up at the trompe l’oeil night sky and see the starry lights twinkling above.  It’s truly a work of art.

I’ve since moved further south and my parents headed north towards the Blue Ridge Mountains, so it’s not as easy to visit my beloved Atlanta. Two years ago, my mother-in-law gifted us with season tickets for my daughter’s birthday, so we got to make several trips with the kids to see shows like Cinderella, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, etc. This historic landmark had captured my heart as a child and fostered many cherished memories, so being able to share this experience with my children was very special.

After several visits to Atlanta to see different shows, I think we finally nailed how to “do the Fox”. We traveled up to Atlanta on Sunday morning and stayed the night at The Georgian Terrace which is literally right across the street from the theater. We checked in around 2:30 pm, freshened up and then headed to an early dinner at Publik Draft House, which is also conveniently located right across the street. We enjoyed dinner and seamlessly made our way to the show – snapped a picture out front and were in our seats in just a few minutes. After the Lion King, everyone was exhausted so it was a major win to simply walk across the road and not have to fight parking lot traffic for an hour or wait for an Uber or shuttle to take us to the hotel.

The historic Georgian Terrace hotel which was constructed in 1910, was designed to evoke the architecture of Paris. Steeped in Southern history, this hotel boasts a pretty impressive guest list including the likes of Walt Disney, President Calvin Coolidge, Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Margaret Mitchell and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The hotel’s grand ballroom was even the site of the Gone with the Wind Gala and the movie’s pre-premiere party.

The hotel was recently renovated in 2009 and is beautiful. The room offerings range from single bedroom to three-bedroom suites with extended stay options. Our group of seven booked two, two-bedroom suites. Let me tell you… this was a GENIUS move. Each of these suites has two bedrooms, a den, breakfast area, full-sized kitchen, laundry room and one bathroom. Who needs a laundry room, you ask?! Well, apparently we do. My daughter had a water bottle leak inside her luggage so we used it to dry her dress with only minutes before it was time to leave. That would have be lots of fun to do with a hair dryer. Also, if you have ever traveled with kids, you know the agony of being right on top of each other with zero personal space. My sister-in-law stayed with me and the kids in one suite. I am an early riser, so it was great to be able to go into the den and drink my coffee without disturbing anyone. I highly recommend this option for families or groups!

Now, there are some great restaurants in Atlanta but prior to a show, I don’t want to be trekking all over the city and stressing about getting to my seat on time. On show days, we like to eat at The Publik Draft House, which as I mentioned is next door to the Fox. While the gastro pub was ranked one of Zagat’s Top 8 Bourbon Bars in Atlanta, I promise you it is suited for families and kids. I’ve enjoyed the Grilled Salmon as well as the Apple Walnut Salad with steak. There is no kid’s menu but they do have burgers, mac and cheese, cheese toasties and brownies with ice cream for the little ones.

The show itself is a must-see for adults and kids alike. This was my first time seeing The Lion King musical and  I was captivated by the music, dancing and costumes. All of the kids loved it -we’ve been to several kid-friendly musicals but there was something very special about this one!

Overall, it was seamless and stress-free trip. I cannot wait to go back and do it again!

I’d love to hear about your favorite places to stay/eat/play while visiting Atlanta.

Cheers,

Christa
